Does Vanta or Drata cover AI usage?

Not the data path. Vanta and Drata are compliance-automation platforms: they collect evidence from your integrations, manage policies, and track control status for frameworks like SOC 2 and ISO 27001. What they do not do is sit in front of ChatGPT or Copilot to inspect and block the prompts your employees send — so 'AI usage' shows up in them as a policy document, not an enforced control. The two categories are complementary: the platform runs your compliance program; an AI firewall produces the enforcement and the evidence that program needs for AI data flows.

What Vanta and Drata actually do well

Continuous evidence collection from your stack (cloud, HR, MDM, ticketing), policy templates and acknowledgment tracking, vendor management, and audit-readiness workflows for SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA programs, and increasingly CMMC preparation. If you run a compliance program, a platform like this is the system of record for it — that's why the HoundShield doctrine classifies them as complementary, not competitors.

Where the AI gap sits

A compliance platform can host your AI acceptable-use policy and record that employees acknowledged it. It cannot see the prompt a designer pastes into ChatGPT at 4:45pm, block the client data inside it, or produce a per-event log an assessor can trace. Enforcement and event evidence live at the network layer, in front of the AI endpoints — a place evidence-collection platforms don't operate.

How the two fit together

  1. The platform (Vanta/Drata) holds the AI policy, the training acknowledgments, and the control status.
  2. The AI firewall (HoundShield, self-hosted on your own infrastructure) enforces the policy at the boundary — scanning prompts locally, blocking regulated data, writing a tamper-evident event log.
  3. The firewall's output becomes the platform's evidence: the assessment PDF and log samples are exactly the artifacts you attach to the relevant controls in your program.

Frequently asked questions

No — and it doesn't try to be. HoundShield enforces and evidences the AI data path (prompt scanning, blocking, hash-chained logs, a NIST 800-171-mapped report). Vanta and Drata run the broader compliance program. Most regulated teams end up with both: the program platform, and the enforcement control it cites.

Their AI features focus on governance of the program itself (AI-assisted questionnaires, policy content, vendor AI risk reviews) and inventorying AI vendors — not interception of live prompts. Check any platform's data path: if it never sits between your users and the AI endpoint, it can't block what gets sent there.

Yes — that's the intended workflow. The $499 CMMC AI Risk Assessment is a signed PDF mapping AI prompt events to NIST 800-171 Rev 2 controls; attach it (plus periodic log samples) to the corresponding controls in your platform as the enforcement evidence behind your AI policy.

Yes. SOC 2's logical-access and confidentiality criteria raise the same question — what controls sensitive data leaving to third-party AI services? Local prompt scanning with attributable logs is the same answer, and the audit trail feeds your SOC 2 evidence the same way.

Use AI without leaking CUI
